DOWNEND Flyers narrowly missed out on snatching the Gloucestershire FA Women’s Challenge Cup final.

Holders Bristol Academy U18s retained the trophy with a 2-1 win thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Kim Maggs.

It was a fairytale for the teenage striker, whose father Tony had died suddenly ten days before, but a blow for the Flyers, who had fought back after going a goal down just before half-time.

Karina Baker scored the equaliser after 66 minutes and the SW Women’s League side pressed hard for a winner at Oaklands Park.

Downend manager Geoff Beazer said: “I thought we were superb and the girls worked their socks off, it’s very disappointing to have lost.”
