Flyers host tournament for 80 teams
ALMOST 20 years had passed since youth football club Downend Flyers Girls had hosted a tournament – but this summer was time to end that drought.
The original date in June had to be postponed due to a rise in covid cases but finally, on August 8, the festival of football was able to commence.
Despite some unseasonal wind and rain, volunteers were on site at 6am to prepare for the sort of event the girls had desperately missed over the last two seasons.
As the rain gradually eased during the morning, the girls did not seem to care being soaked to the skin as the cheers went up all around the ten pitches at Johnson Road in Emersons Green when the glorious sound of the thwack of leather nestling in nets rang around the venue.
Over the course of the day more than 80 teams competed, featuring girls aged from five to 15 years old in eight different age groups.
Local Bristol teams were of course present but there were visitors from Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire and as far afield as the city of Oxford.
The later games were played under some sunshine at the end of the day.
The club looks forward to hosting the tournament again next summer, with feedback welcomed from teams and locals to ensure a successful and considerate event to ring in a special 30th anniversary year for the club, which continues to grow with nearly 250 girls and two senior teams now under the Downend Flyers umbrella.
