Garden waste service update
Here is a short update about our garden waste service. A few weeks ago, we made the difficult decision to suspend the garden waste collection service to prioritise black bin waste and recycling collections from households, following the outbreak of COVID-19.
Although we are still short staffed, the proactive changes we made to waste and recycling services in March mean that we can restart the garden waste service from Monday 27 April.
Extensions for missed collections
If you had an active garden waste subscription on or after 23 March 2020, you will automatically receive a five week extension to cover the collections that were missed during the suspension. You will receive a confirmation email direct from the service about these changes.
To have your garden waste bin emptied from 27 April, please:
- Put your garden waste bin out on your normal collection day by 7:00am.
- Be sensible about what you put in the bin. Our crews may not be able to empty overweight bins. We understand you may have a backlog of garden waste, but do not try to squeeze everything into the bin to be collected in one go. If your bin is very full and heavy, please try to remove some of the contents before your collection so our crews can empty it safely.
- Only put compostable garden waste in the bin. Do not put any other type of waste in – this contaminates the material so we won’t be able to compost it and would have to dispose of it as non-recyclable waste.
- Carry on composting. Reducing garden waste and composting where possible will help keep the service going in the current situation.
Garden waste sacks for one-off collections
If you have already bought a sack for garden waste, you can book a one-off collection from Monday 27 April. The sacks are not currently available for sale.
While we will do our best to collect garden waste on the scheduled day, we are still short staffed. We ask that you bear with us if your garden waste is not collected and let us know the day after your normal collection day at www.southglos.gov.uk/reportit.
Recycling collections will continue to take place every two weeks on the same day as your black bin collection until further notice. The Sort It recycling centres are still closed, following the restrictions set by the government. This situation is under constant review.
New subscriptions to the service
If you would like to subscribe to this service, you will be able to sign up on this page from 27 April onwards.
