Local author's latest book
AN AUTHOR from Pucklechurch has combined her two passions – dogs and camping - in her latest book.
Dog lover Anna Chelmicka took up writing, photography and travelling after a 30-year teaching career.
She found there was very little information out there on dog-friendly campsites so decided to write about the subject herself.
Wonderful Walks from Dog-friendly Campsites Throughout the UK was published on February 15 and provides readers with a guide to places which will welcome their pooch, some even providing special facilities for them.
The 248-page fully illustrated book features 46 circular walks from 23 campsites, with each trek ranging from eight to 11 miles.
Anna developed a love of dogs as a child when her father was given a German Shepherd as payment for a job. Her love of camping, however, took a little longer to nurture.
Anna said: “My initial camping experience with the Guides under bell tents was not especially happy. However later, when my children were small, our trips out in our campervan were exciting and great fun. This changed when they became teenagers so I took a break. When I retired I bought a motorhome and began a new phase, but this time with a dog as company.
“I travelled all over Europe and the UK in my motorhome and having to exercise a dog resulted in the need to explore the areas around campsites. I discovered how little information there was about the suitability of campsites for dogs despite so many people taking their pets camping with them.”
In 2016 Anna wrote a series of articles about walks from campsites for Motorhome magazine, which were to form the basis of her book.
“For those who like camping and walking but aren’t sure where to go, this book will help you find the perfect location,” said Anna.
“All of the campsites are located very close to footpaths and walking trails and the walks provide the opportunity to explore the area and appreciate the diverse environments that can be found in Britain.”
Anna did most of her research with her current dog Pearl, a yellow Labrador Retriever and the great-granddaughter of Ruby, the subject of her first book, My Friend Ruby, who died in May 2016.
“In the book there is a section called Pearls of Wisdom where she gives a review of all the campsites from a dog's perspective.
“Pearl is very clever. She has done some film and TV work and appeared in a play, The Open House, in the Ustinov Studio at the Theatre Royal in Bath. She did 20 performances and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.”
Wonderful Walks from Dog-friendly Campsites Throughout the UK is published by Hubble and Hattie, part of the Veloce publishing group, at the price of £14.99. Anna will be signing copies at the Rose and Crown in Pucklechurch on Sunday March 10 from 4.30pm.
