Mangotsfield Post Office set to move to convenience store

August 04 2014

MANGOTSFIELD’S Post Office service could soon be available from 6am to 9pm seven days a week.

MANGOTSFIELD’S Post Office service could soon be available from 6am to 9pm seven days a week.

The Post Office is proposing to move the service from Cossham Street to the convenience store in Northcote Road.

This will mean that opening times are more than doubled to 105 hours a week, including all day Sunday and Wednesday and Saturday afternoons

The Post Office is inviting comments on the planned new open-plan service, which would be available from tills at the shop counter rather than from separate screened counters.

The new facility is 483 metres from the current site, whose owner is understood to be ready to retire after running the post office for many years, and would offer similar services.

A spokesman said: “Should the move go ahead customers will be able to access a wide range of Post Office and mails services, including Special Delivery, Local Collect, home shopping returns, online banking cash deposits and withdrawals, sending funds abroad using Moneygram, and customers can pay bills, pre-order travel money, Euro on demand, apply for travel insurance and top up mobile phones.”

The proposed move is part of a nationwide modernisation of the Post Office, said to be designed to make it easier for customers to do business, through longer opening hours and modern open plan environments.

Will Russell, Post Office regional manager, said: “We understand how important having a Post Office is to residents in Mangotsfield and we are confident this new modern Post Office service will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future. This modernisation is part of a major investment programme, the largest in the history of the Post Office and marks a commitment to no more branch closure programmes.”

The Government has committed £1.34bn for the Post Office network to make sure there is no programme of Post Office closures and to update branches. In November the Government announced a further £640m investment in the Post Office network, from 2015 to 2018.

Nationwide the investment programme will see up to 8,000 branches modernised with additional investment in over 3,000 community and outreach branches.

A seven-week consultation has opened on the Mangotsfield proposal. It has been extended by a week because of the summer holidays and closes on September 5.
