THE Elite Chung Do Kwan Martial Arts Black Belt Academy in Page Park, Staple Hill, is celebrating after scooping 23 medals at the 2014 UK Chung Do Kwan British Championship.

Facing competitors from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales as well as others from Argentina, Morocco, Philippines and Thailand and other countries , members of the Staple Hill club were up against some tough opposition.

Their overall medals tally was eight gold, 12 silver and three bronze.

National and international Black Belt champion Ellis Riley cruised to victory in the men’s heavyweight full-contact division to add another British title to his growing list of achievements. Ellis, who works as a prison officer,  has already competed for England and Britain in international events but has now been invited to compete for Jamaica, which he qualifies for through his father.  He is hoping to represent Jamaica in the USA in August.

Kingswood plumber and 3rd Dan Black Belt, Damien Chaney, also took the British Champion title by taking Gold in the Senior Black Belt Poomsae (Pattern) category.  Damien originally trained with the Black Belt Academy when he was much younger where he achieved his Black Belt and was a regular competitor.  After leaving the sport for a number of years he has since taken the sport back up with the club and re-establish his winning credentials.

After returning from the Children’s World Taekwondo Championships in Germany with the Taekwondo England Squad at the beginning of February where he won a bronze medal, 12-year-old Downend School pupil Dean Turner wasted no time in adding the British title in Olympic style full-contact sparring and Poomsae to his achievements and also silver medal in Weapons demonstration forms.

Not to be out done by his older brother, eight-year-old sibling Sean Turner took three British titles in Full-Contact sparring, Pee Wee boys semi-contact sparring and open grade semi-contact sparring and for good measure added a junior colour belt Poomsae silver medal to his tally.

Just to keep it in the Turner family, Mum Christina won a silver medal in the women’s semi-contact sparring.

Jazmin Brice, 11,  fought for a hard earned gold medal in the girls full-contact sparring to claim the British title with younger brother Ethan, eight,  taking silver in the Pee Wee Boys full-contact sparring.

Another family team saw brothers Gabriel and Leo Lee dominate the junior Black Belt semi-contact sparring only to face each other in the final where Gabriel edged his way to victory and the British title and Leo in second place.  Gabriel and Leo already train with the Taekwondo England National Squad and international representatives from other organisations have now invited them to train with their squads for international selections.  Gabriel also went on to take two silver medals in Full-Contact sparring Divisions where Leo also won bronze.

Six-year-old Marco Laporta put in spirited performances in both the full-contact and semi-contact sparring divisions where he eventually received a bronze medal for his efforts.

Surprise winner of the day was nine-year-old Liam Meadon in the beginners semi-contact sparring category where he made short work of his opponents to win gold.

Taylor Hardwick, 12,  won silver in the junior Black Belt Patterns and bronze in the weapons demonstration forms.

The chief instructor of the academy Andy Davies has now been appointed as the coaching director of Undeb Taekwondo Cymru (Welsh Taekwondo Union), qualifying through his Welsh-born father, who praised academy instructors Paul Hollier and David Clarke for helping to make the Black Belt Academy a highly acclaimed centre of excellence.
