THEY may be rivals on the pitch but Rovers and City fans are uniting to raise money for charity in Mangotsfield this month.
The Mango Reds v Mango Blues football match will see fans from Bristol's Football League clubs play for bragging rights at Mangotsfield United's Cossham Street ground on Sunday, October 6.
It is the second time the match has been staged, and last year's game, arranged after a drunken conversation between City fan Gerrian Baker and Rovers supporter Dean Gardner in the Red Lion pub, proved to be the catalyst for a new fundraising group, Mangotsfield Community Association, which is organising this year's fixture.
The association has organised a variety of fundraising events since then but the Reds v Blues match will be the biggest of the year.
The gates will open at 9.30am and there will be a children's penalty shoot-out competition at around 10.30am before the main event, which kicks off at 12.30pm.
There will also be DJ sets, a bouncy castle, hot food, two all-day bars, a raffle and an auction.
All money raised will go to the association's nominated charities, St Peter's Hospice and Special Friends Club for children and young people with autism.
Gerrian said: "Its nearly a year since the first hastily arranged football match was played between the Red and Blue halves of the village at Mangotsfield United Football Club.
"Since then the Mangotsfield Community Association has evolved, and gone from strength to strength to raise funds for this year’s chosen charities."
Last year's match finished 6-2 to the City fans' team and Gerrian said their rivals were "desperate to avenge last year’s defeat".
The event is sponsored by Love-Yr-Motor and entry is free. There will be collection buckets around the ground being shaken and representatives from the charities in attendance, as well as a match day programme with player profiles, auction and sponsorship details.
Gerrian said: "Please bring the wife, husband, the kids, the in-laws, the outlaws, the neighbours and as many people as you can muster to cheer on your local teams and have a wonderful day out that will last well into the evening."
