FOR every child, going to secondary school for the first time can seem daunting.

But for Year 6 pupils at Christ Church Junior School, the next stage in their lives might just be made a little easier knowing they have the support of their community.

The youngsters, along with parents, attended a special service at Christ Church Downend on the theme of Moving On - New Beginnings.

Members of Fishponds and Downend Rotary Club were among the congregation showing their support to the children.

As part of the rotary club’s commitment to serve the local community, members presented an illustrated dictionary to each of the pupils leaving junior school. The children also received a leaving gift from the school.

During the service, hymns, songs and prayers were interspersed with pupils’ recollections of their time at the school.

The dictionaries were presented by three club officers – president Tony Bryant, incoming president Ron Aspbury and president elect Mike Gay.

Both Tony Bryant and Mike Gay are former pupils of the school and before the presentations explained to the congregation what the rotary club is and does then shared some of their memories of being at the school many years ago.

Mr Bryant said: “This Fishponds and Downend Rotary Club initiative is to promote literacy and help the children develop their knowledge of the English language.

“The gift of a dictionary will help them develop autonomy and confidence as learners and it will help them with their homework in secondary education.”

Fishponds and Downend Rotary Club welcomes new members. Anyone interested should ring 0117 965 8261.
