THE latest changes to bin collections in the Downend area come into force from June 2.

South Gloucestershire Council is changing its system so that black and green bins are emptied fortnightly on the same day, while recycling collections are made on the alternate weeks. Food waste will continue to be collected weekly.

The change, which follows a furore over the introduction of a £36 annual charge for collection of garden refuse in April, is necessary to cope with the additional recycling services – for mixed plastics and small electrical goods - that have been introduced, the council says.

It has been distributing calendar ‘hangers’ with details of the new dates. If you have not received one, please contact the council on or call 01454 868 000.

Some people have complained of missed collections since the April changes. The council says it is important to ensure your bin or appropriate recycling is out by 7am on collection day. If your collection is missed, you need to contact Streetcare as above.

The Conservatives are continuing to campaign against the charge for green bins and the council is due to debate a petition from Kingswood Tory MP Chris Skidmore calling for an end to the “bin tax”.

Councillor Ian Adams, Conservative lead on the authority’s communities committee, said: “When so many residents have seen their green bins go uncollected despite paying the council’s controversial bin tax, people will understandably have major concerns over the ability of both the council and its waste contractor Sita to manage such a massive change in the waste collection service. There’s a real fear that changing collection dates so suddenly will lead to yet more bin chaos.”
