Trolley good support all round for foodbank

SUPPORT is growing for the Mangotsfield and Downend foodbank, which celebrates its first anniversary this month.

And that’s just as well, because demand for the service has risen and is expected to continue to increase.

The foodbank has had two major boosts over the summer. Sixth-formers at Downend School organised a hugely successful collection of food and Sainsbury’s at Emersons Green has agreed to hold regular collections to allow shoppers to contribute easily to the project.

The foodbank is based at the Resound church in Blackhorse Road, Mangotsfield, and is run by volunteers from a number of churches. It is open every Friday morning to provide emergency food and other essentials to people in short-term crisis.

Co-ordinator Claire Collins said that although numbers seeking help fell during the warm weather – possibly because people did not need to choose between eating and heating their homes – demand rose again during the school holidays.

“With autumn just round the corner, we are sure that demand will begin to steadily increase to above and beyond that of last year,” she said.

Ms Collins praised the Downend School collection, which was run by students Riley Cox, Alex Taljaard and Tai Jarman. Their decision to run an inter-house challenge to collect 450 items led to a “food-gathering frenzy” that resulted in 1167 items being donated. This equates to 468 meals for 52 local people. “It was an amazing effort,” she said.

Ms Collins urged any schools organising harvest festivals and planning to collect for the foodbank to contact her for the latest shopping list, so that the items needed would match those given.

The Sainsbury’s collection should also help the volunteers manage their supplies. These will take place on the final Friday of each month – September 25, October 24 and November 28 are booked so far.

Tracy Cannard, of Sainsbury’s, said: “We are proud to support the foodbank. We are at the heart of the community and it is vital we make a difference and be a good neighbour.”

Another way to help the foodbank is through donating your Nectar points. The foodbank has an account, which it can use to buy bread, spread and other necessary items. Contact Resound if you would like a card.

Ms Collins is also keen to hear from former foodbank clients. “

We are putting together some stories from people who have accessed the foodbank over the past year. If you are one of those and would like to contribute then please email me,” she said.

“Any stories will of course be kept anonymous but it would be good to let our supporters know about those who have benefited over the past year. It enables volunteers and supporters to be kept informed of the great work of foodbanks in the UK.”
