Victory for Downend CC
DOWNEND Cricket Club’s first XI are celebrating a victory over top-of-the-table Bath in the West of England Premier League 1.
In a game everyone at the club looks forward to, an excellent partnership from Brandon Gilmour (121) and Jordan Garrett (87) steered Downend to a competitive target of 308. They then bowled Bath out for 234, with young player Hamdi taking three wickets in his first spell.
It followed a fantastic performance from Matt Jackson the week before against Taunton St Andrews, when he took nine wickets for 27 runs, the best league bowling figures ever by a Downend player. But the ex-captain’s efforts were in vain as Downend fell 44 runs short of their opponents' 165, finishing on 121 all out after 25.1 overs.
The league match with Bristol CC on June 15 was rained off.
The 2XI’s wins over Bedminster and Almondsbury included a century from Phil Jackson and 61 from Mahdi. For the 3XI, Matt Curtis hit back-to-back 120s to help his side to 3 wins from 4.
On June 28 Downend Cricket Club was set to host Gloucestershire batsman Ian Cockbain’s testimonial game, starting at 5pm.
All visitors are welcome, with the bars open.
