A VOLUNTEER in Staple Hill's PDSA shop has been shortlisted for a national award.

Wendy Barmstone, 72, is up against two other hopefuls in the Retail Volunteer of the Year category in the veterinary charity's annual awards.

Wendy has been praised for her attention to detail, ensuring the shop raises as much money for the charity as possible.

Staple Hill PDSA shop manager, Karen Browne, said: “Wendy volunteers with us three times a week, but often covers additional days if needed. Working on the shop floor, she knows our customers and their needs and is constantly aware of what’s being sold so we can keep the shelves replenished. Having volunteered with us for five years, Wendy has a wealth of knowledge and experience to share with new volunteers to help nurture their confidence and abilities.

“Wendy is a great role model and customer service champion. She recognises that running a successful shop isn’t about sitting behind the till waiting for customers, but about customer service and team work. She is a real asset to PDSA in Staple Hill and deserves to be recognised.”

Wendy said: “I am very proud to be nominated for this award. I decided to volunteer for PDSA after they treated my mother’s dog. The vets and nurses were superb. PDSA really values me and my abilities, and is a cause that I am very passionate about. Volunteering makes me feel worthwhile and gives me immense satisfaction. I would recommend it to anyone, it’s great fun!”

PDSA, which provides free veterinary treatment to the sick and injured pets of people in need, has more than 4,500 volunteers helping in its charity shops, pet hospitals and fundraising groups across the country. Together these volunteers help save PDSA £12.2 million a year.
